The Inula plant is a tall perennial, up to six feet in height, with very large oval leaves and yellow, daisy-like flowers. It originated in Asia but is now cultivated throughout the world as a medicinal and ornamental plant.

The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the roots and rhizomes and sometimes from the flowering tops. It is unusual in that it is a beautiful deep green colour and it has a very pleasant, honey-like aroma.
