Sage is an evergreen perennial herb up to 80cm in height with a woody base, soft silver, oval leaves and a mass of blue or violet flowers.
Sage essential oil's uses include being a digestive stimulant and it is indicated where there is loss of appetite. It also has a beneficial effect on the female reproductive system, since it imitates the hormone oestrogen. Due to its high levels if thujone, it may be abortifacient so must be avoided during pregnancy. Avoid for people with epilepsy or high blood pressure. Use with extreme care in aromatherapy.
