Lemon essential oil is expressed from the lemon rind. Originating in India it was brought to Europe by the crusaders, and is widely cultivated in Italy.
It has long been used as an antiseptic, particularly for bites by disease-carrying insects. Today it is used as a flavouring in foods and drinks.
